In addition to our labour law and human rights law practices, SGM has a thriving practice in other areas of administrative law.

SGM has extensive experience representing clients before professional disciplinary tribunals. We have also represented clients at some of the most significant public inquiries in Canada, including the Walkerton Inquiry, the Sophonow Inquiry, the Morin Inquiry, the Lamer Inquiry and the Estey Inquiry. SGM’s lawyers have also acted as commission counsel in several public inquiries, including the Cornwall Public Inquiry, the Commission of Inquiry on the Blood System in Canada and the Driskell Inquiry.

SGM represents a number of administrative agencies and tribunals, providing them with advice on a wide range of issues, and conducting training seminars for their members on administrative law practice issues. In addition, SGM acts as independent legal counsel for the Competence, Professional Conduct and Appeal Tribunals of the Certified General Accountants Association of Ontario. We also conduct prosecutions for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

Representing clients in judicial review and appeal proceedings before provincial and federal courts and the Supreme Court of Canada is another significant aspect of SGM’s administrative law practice. Some of our notable administrative law cases include:

CUPE v. Ontario (Minister of Labour), [2003] 1 S.C.R. 539

Lakeport Beverages v. Teamsters Local Union 938 (2005), 258 D.L.R. (4th) 10 (Ont. C.A.)

Chamberlain v. Surrey School District No. 36, [2002] 4 S.C.R. 710
