Fay Brunning practices civil litigation in SGM's Ottawa office. Her practise focuses on all areas of employment law, including termination of employment, wrongful dismissal, employment contracts, human rights complaints, harassment complaints, and retirement compensation packages. She also represents regulated health professionals in discipline matters and registration and fitness to practice issues.
Fay joined SGM in 2008 after practising civil litigation with another Ottawa firm for twenty years. During that time, she had a varied litigation practise, appearing at all levels of court in Ontario and the Federal Court and before a variety of administrative tribunals and appeal boards. She also represented doctors, nurses, pharmacists, psychologists and physiotherapists in proceedings before their respective colleges on issues of discipline, registration and fitness to practice.
Fay is a previous director of the board of The Advocates' Society of Ontario. She remains an active member of the Advocates' Society, organizing and presenting at educational seminars and honourary events. She was a member of the Alumni Advisory Council to the Dean of Law at Queen's University at Kingston for six years. She taught civil procedure as an associate professor at the University of Ottawa. Fay regularly presents at seminars and symposiums around the province on issues of professionalism, employment law and health law. She has been actively involved in various initiatives in support of women in the legal profession and was a member of the Ottawa Executive of the Women's Law Association of Ontario for many years.
Fay is originally from Saskatchewan. In the Ottawa community, Fay is or has been involved in charitable organizations including the Famous Five Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House, Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, as well as various programs related to her children.
Fay received her law degree from Queen's University and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1989. She also has a bachelor of arts degree in political science and economics from Carleton University, where she graduated with distinction.
