Heidi Rubin is a member of SGM’s civil litigation group. She practises all manner of civil litigation with an emphasis on commercial litigation, professional discipline and actions against public authorities. Her practice includes contractual and tort disputes, professional negligence, malicious prosecution against the police, constitutional matters, defamation, administrative law, and employment law.
Heidi has appeared before a variety of courts and tribunals, including the Ontario Superior Court of Justice (including the Commercial Court), the Court of Appeal for Ontario, the Federal Court of Canada, the Human Rights Commission, the Canada Labour Board, the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Securities Commission. She has also acted as counsel in private arbitrations and mediations.
Heidi has recently been involved in:
- an application against the City of Toronto to quash a by-law
- a trial where she defended a lawyer against a negligence claim
- a trial involving a commercial real estate contract
- an private arbitration involving wills and estates
- a commercial dispute involving shares in a television station
- various actions against the police for wrongful arrests and breaches of Charter rights
Heidi graduated from McGill University in 1995 with a bachelor of arts degree in economics and political science. She studied biochemistry at McGill University for two years before attending law school at the University of Ottawa where she received an LL.B. in 2000, graduating with honours. She joined the firm in 2004 after working for another prominent Toronto firm.
Heidi grew-up in Montreal and speaks French.
