Sean Dewart

Sean Dewart is the head of SGM’s civil litigation group. He began practising law in 1986 and joined SGM in 1998.

Sean's practice focuses on complex commercial litigation with expertise in professional liability and prosecutorial misconduct cases.  He also handles many types of civil disputes for individuals, professional organizations and trade unions, including bankruptcy and defamation.  A major part of Sean's practice includes defending lawyers who are being sued for negligence by former clients.  Sean has appeared as counsel at all levels of the courts in Ontario and in the Supreme Court of Canada, as well as before the Discipline Committee of the Law Society of Upper Canada and numerous other tribunals.

Sean is a regular speaker on a wide variety of subjects relating to trial practice and substantive law, including labour relations in bankruptcy and insolvency proceedings and suing police agencies. He has been very actively involved in recent law reform initiatives to reduce delays in the civil justice system and worked closely with the Chief Justice of Ontario in developing Rule 78 of the Rules of Civil Procedure which has dramatically reduced the backlog of cases in the Toronto Region.

Sean is an active member of various professional organizations, including the Advocates' Society, the Ontario Bar Association, and the Toronto Lawyers' Association. He has also acted as Director and Member of the Management Committee of the Board of Directors, Huntington Society of Canada,  Member of the Executive Committee of the Civil Litigation Section of the Canadian Bar Association of Ontario, and Chair of the Managing Board of the Legal Clinic, Osgoode Hall Law School.

Sean received a bachelor of laws degree from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1983 and a master of laws degree from the London School of Economics in 1985.
