Darrell Brown practices in the pension, corporate governance and commercial law areas, while supporting broader policy and international development initiatives.
Prior to joining SGM, Darrell developed his expertise in pensions by working for two large, international pension benefits firms and later specialized in pensions and investment funds at another union-side labour firm in Toronto. His practice emphasized pension policy development and compliance services. He actively participated in the CPP reform dialogue, and successfully advocated before Parliament on behalf of multi-employer benefit plan administrators, serviced both single employer and multi-employer pension and benefit plans as well as several investment funds, and worked as a senior policy advisor to the Financial Services Commission of Ontario.
In 1997, Darrell was offered the opportunity to assist in the design and implementation of a new national pension system in Kazakhstan. He soon was appointed the head of that project which led to several subsequent legal reform opportunities spanning former republics of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia and several countries in Southeast Asia. These reforms covered a broad swath of topics including pension, insurance, bankruptcy, governance, non-bank financial services, business registration, commercial law, mediation, arbitration, administrative law and judicial reforms. In 2002, he was presented with a medal and commendation from the Ukrainian Government in recognition of his substantial contribution to that country’s reform efforts.
Originally from Nova Scotia, Darrell obtained a first class honours B.Sc. majoring in Psychology (1981), followed by an LL.B. and M.B.A. (1985) from Dalhousie University. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1989.
