Louis Sokolov is a partner and a leader of SGM’s class action and civil litigation groups. He began practising law in 1993 and joined SGM in 1999.
Louis handles a variety of civil disputes for both individuals and institutions, with a particular emphasis on class actions, employment law and professional negligence and discipline. Louis began his career as a criminal defence counsel and has expertise in both prosecuting and defending civil disputes related to criminal law.
Louis has an active trial and appellate practice which has repeatedly taken him to the Supreme Court of Canada, including in the recent case of Hill v. Hamilton-Wentworth Police Services Board which established a tort of negligent investigation - a first in any common law jurisdiction.
Louis is lead or co-lead counsel in a number of complex class proceedings, including in Fulawka v. Bank of Nova Scotia - the largest employment class action certified in Canada.
Louis is a long-time board member of the Association of Defence of the Wrongly Convicted (AIDWYC) and frequent presenter at continuing legal education conferences.
Louis received his law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School. He also has a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Toronto.
