Cathy Lace practises in the area of labour law and human rights, representing trade unions and employees before a variety of tribunals. She joined SGM in 1982, after practising law in British Columbia for several years.
Cathy is one of the leading legal experts on the representation of university faculty associations in Canada. She represents numerous faculty associations in Ontario in arbitration, labour board and internal university proceedings, including cases involving tenure and promotion, academic freedom, research ethics, discipline, and issues of significance to medical faculty and residents. Cathy also frequently advises faculty associations on the negotiation of their collective agreements and the resolution of their disputes at interest arbitration.
Cathy also has an extensive practice in the area of human rights, including dealing with complaints of harassment, discrimination and accommodation, negotiating and litigating the achievement and maintenance of pay equity, and advising clients on employment equity issues. In addition, she is a frequent speaker on harassment, discrimination and pay and employment equity issues, and on issues of concern to university faculty.
Cathy received her law degree from the University of Toronto and has a bachelor of arts degree from Queen’s University. She was called to the Ontario Bar in 1979 and to the British Columbia Bar in 1980.
